Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal are Dutch choreographers and performing artists, a sibling duo forming a creative partnership. Following distinguished careers as dancers with the renowned Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT 1 & NDT 2) and Batsheva Dance Company, they transitioned into their own choreographic work.
They made their debut with LiNK for the talent programme Up & Coming Choreographers in 2014, followed by John Doe for the same initiative in 2015. In 2017, they created their first work for NDT 2, The Grey, and in 2019, they presented the acclaimed Take Root for NDT 1, which received a nomination for the Dutch dance award “Zwaan” for “most impressive dance production”.
In 2021, they created Baby don’t hurt me for NDT 1, exploring themes of identity, sexuality, gender and love. This was followed by Eye Candy for Rambert Dance Company and The little man for Nationaltheater Mannheim.
During 2023–2024, they established themselves as sought-after international choreographers with works such as To Kingdom Come for GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, Mommy, Look! for Ballett Theater Basel, The Point Being for Nederlands Dans Theater in collaboration with DRIFT, and I am Bob for Hessisches Staatsballett. They also created the interdisciplinary production Voodoo Waltz for Schauspielhaus Bochum, which was awarded the German theatre prize Der Faust.
Their work Atlas Song, in collaboration with composer Anna von Hausswolff, had its world premiere at GöteborgsOperan and Göteborgs Dans- och Teaterfestival in 2024.
Imre and Marne van Opstal have been appointed associate choreographers at Nederlands Dans Theater beginning with the 2025/26 season.
