Never before have we looked forward to a new season with such hope and such humility. The last year has not only verified the importance of practising acceptance and gratitude, but has also encouraged us to find opportunities in our limitations. The world has been longing for motivation and inspiration and to share physical space and time together. Culture is a vital and fundamental part of life and society – and we can’t wait to reconnect with our audience and share our art.
We’re eager for you to feel the gravitational pull of the whirlwind of life in Hurricane by the amazing Yoann Bourgeois, and to sit on the edge of your seat while experiencing the thrilling pace of the beam of time in Continuim by Paul Blackman and Christine Gouzelis. We definitely don’t want you to miss out on Here not Here by prestigious British choreographer Maxine Doyle and fascinating set designer and artist Es Devlin, which will take you on a maze-like exploration of the entire opera house. One of the world’s most in-demand artists, Sharon Eyal, returns with a new work created for fifteen of our fabulous dancers wearing costumes created by none other than Maria Grazia Chiuri from Dior.
Alan Lucien Øyen chooses the child’s perspective in a new, playful, intriguing piece with a multi-layered set design. Damien Jalet, the creator of Skid, our most successful production, returns to create yet another masterpiece for the amazing dancers of GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.
And we also want to reveal the magic of performing arts to children. Astronaut by Carl Olof Berg will be presented in schools, in the region and on our Small Stage. The piece is based on physical and mental challenges, and is inspired by NASA's first female moon expedition in 2024.
We continue to nurture our dancers’ talent in an inspiring collaboration with acclaimed dance company Nederlands Dans Theater that provides a platform for emerging female choreographers.
GöteborgsOperans Danskompani will continue our international exposure with performances in Paris, Grenoble, Aix-en-Provence, Ludwigshafen, Turnhout, Oslo, Moscow and St Petersburg.
Last but not least, we will organise our second Dance Festival in May 2022. The first festival in 2019 was a huge success artistically as well as in audience attendance.
In addition to performances, we will continue to hold open rehearsals, after-dance talks, discussions, physical introductions and participatory activities for children and young people.
We’re immensely proud of our 2021/2022 season and can’t wait to share the space with you.
