It is surreal to look back and realise that during the last three seasons we have been unable to truly fulfill our vision and goals – constantly readjusting our plans and programs, finding new innovative ways to connect to our audience in order to share our art.
It is therefore with enthusiasm and excitement that we present our ambitious program for season 2022/2023, continuing the path of growth and development.
We wish to stay curious and inclusive, to encourage a creative dialogue not only between us and our artistic collaborators but also with our audience. We aspire to offer dance productions with high artistic integrity that will take us and our audience on a physical and intellectual journey.
Through our international touring we enter new fields, exploring new horizons. Taiwan and Korea are among new destinations for the coming season. But we also return to previously visited venues and cities – such as Théâtre National de Chaillot in Paris and Sadler’s Wells in London.
We open the season with an all-time public favourite piece, Skid by Damien Jalet. This time combined with Kites, our newest “tour de force” created by Damien Jalet. Only a few performances in August!
We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with Alexander Ekman. A Swedish multi-awarded choreographer in high international demand, known for his large scale works with a humorous twist, and celebrated by the audience. Alexander is creating a full evening programme for the entire GöteborgsOperans Danskompani.
Another critically acclaimed Swedish choreographer, Johan Inger, will be joining us next season. A former artistic director of e.g. Cullberg Ballet, now travelling around the world creating for prominent dance companies. Johan Inger’s piece will share an evening with the siblings Imre and Marne van Opstal, former dancers with prestigious Nederlands Dans Theater and Batsheva Dance Company. Van Opstals form a Dutch choreographic duo that is a rising star in the field of contemporary dance. They have developed a movement language of their own, known for its eclectic, theatrical and partnering elements.
We will present our long-awaited collaboration 12 Songs with the exquisite artist Ane Brun. In the hands of choreographer Kenneth Kvarnström, her songs have been transfigured into dance. Live Ane Brun, with live Gothenburg Opera orchestra and live dance on stage – we are beyond excited to finally make this happen after several years of shifted plans.
Astronaut for young audiences by Carl Olof Berg was a triumph during its first performance period in Autumn 2021. In high demand, Astronaut comes back in season 2022/2023. The dancers join kids in their classrooms for an inspirational lift off with fantasies of outer space, mixed with hard physical training. Touring in Västra Götaland, both in schools and in other venues as family performances.
Skapa Dance continues to invite groups and individuals, children and adults, to be part of projects, performances and activities with our dancers. Participation, accessibility, mutual learning and sharing are at the heart of these encounters.
In addition to performances, we further the dialogue with our audience in open rehearsals, after talks, discussions, physical introductions and more.
In a constantly evolving world, dance remains a universal language with the power to move beyond what is imaginable.
Welcome to explore the possibilities of dance with us!
