If you weren’t among the lucky ones that got a ticket last season, you should buy yours now. With a massive group of 31 dancers Hammer is a bold, beautiful and unique all-embracing experience. A dance piece for everyone – from the first-time visitor to the dance enthusiast.
Following this success, we look forward to yet another promising, inclusive and dynamic season, presenting art that we believe speaks to many. Euphoric affirmations of who we are and what we stand for: courageous, unpredictable, art at the highest possible level. We honor and commission established, celebrated choreographers already known to our audience, but also highlight emerging, current and cutting-edge voices that we believe will become influential in the near future. We aspire to identify such talent and to be a platform in our field. With the vital contribution of our dedicated and creative group of dancers, the choreographers bring different and exciting flavors to each production.
The revival of Contemporary Dance by Hofesh Shechter is a perfect fit for a season opening. A celebration of dance and movement, with pumping rhythms and ironic twists. Ever since the world premiere in Gothenburg 2019, GöteborgsOperans Danskompani has had the pleasure to present the piece in prestigious international venues, with sold out performances and to great acclaim from both critics and audiences. Before the international tour continues, we give our local audiences an opportunity to experience this bombastic piece on our home stage in Gothenburg. The evening will start off already outside of the opera house, with a brand new and exciting creation by Tali Zavilevich.
The season will present four world premieres; two in autumn and two in spring. In the first double bill, Hofesh Shechter will share with us some deeper colours and different shades of his artistic palette. True to his habit he sets the movement to his own original music and plunges the dancers into a highly physical and rhythmical place that invites and draws us in. The second world premiere is created by Tom Weinberger, a former dancer of Batsheva Dance Company and GöteborgsOperans Danskompani and who first created for us in our pop up-festival in spring 2022. Tom´s work is innovative and vibrant, showcasing the multiple skills of the dancers.
Following the breath-taking Hurricane (2020) we are filled with anticipation for choreographer and acrobat Yoann Bourgeois’ new creation premiering in spring 2024. In a physically demanding but at the same time poetic and human universe, his exploration this time is on the airborne. Sharing the evening with Bourgeois is Emma Portner, a young and brightly shining star whose choreographic expression is felt at the core. Whether in a music video for Justin Bieber or in a creation for the Norwegian National Ballet, the intensity and presence of her movement material is indisputable.
We are truly grateful that so many people are curious and excited about GöteborgsOperans Danskompani. Our dancers find true inspiration and joy in meeting our local audiences; in the auditoriums of the opera house, in classrooms and on regional tours. Likewise, we take great pride in our high international reputation. The company is presented in prestigious festivals and guest venues worldwide – the demand is higher that we can meet. Those experiences and meetings enrich us both as artists and as human beings. This season includes guest performances in Germany, France, The Netherlands, Austria, and other countries.
We naturally continue to welcome the audience in open rehearsals, after talks, workshops and physical introductions. Our Skapa department invites children, youngsters and adults to participatory activities and projects where inclusion and exchange are in focus, featuring our dancers and collaborators from different departments of the opera house.
GöteborgsOperans Danskompani takes pride in being a driving force – presenting bold and beautiful art, opening minds and touching hearts.
Welcome to season 2023/2024!
