Henning Ruhe has been the Artistic Director of Opera/Drama at the Göteborg Opera since 2019. Under his leadership, the Göteborg Opera has further honed and expanded its music-dramatic repertoire through a successful fusion of international excellence and local resonance.
Born in Hamburg, Henning was trained as a pianist at the Franz Liszt Conservatory in Weimar. As a concert pianist, he garnered numerous national and international awards, performing at solo and chamber concerts across Europe, North America, and Asia. He has graced illustrious venues like Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo, the Lucerne Festival, and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.
Henning has a background in arts management and has worked at the Staatsoper Berlin, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, IMG Artists in New York, and Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. At the Bayerische Staatsoper, he directed initiatives focused on young artists through the "Opera Studio", participation and learning programs, as well as international projects and tours. In 2017, he assumed the role of Head of Artistic Administration at the same opera house, overseeing repertoire planning, casting, and serving as the artistic leader of the innovative and inventive branch "Festspielwerkstatt" of Munich's opera festivals.
Henning also holds a position on the board of the opera house network Opera Europa.
