Architect Jan Izikowitz drew inspiration not only from the opera world, but also from the splendid harbour landscape which is central to Gothenburg’s culture and aesthetic. Echoed in the design of the house one can see silhouettes of ships, hulls, sails, bridges and harbour cranes.
In Gothenburg, the Göteborg Opera has the Main Stage and the Small Stage; but we also have a stage in the regional city of Skövde. Beyond that we collaborate with several other stages in the Västra Götaland region. We also go on tours every season, which give us a chance to meet new audiences, both in Sweden and around the world.
The Main and Small Stages
The auditorium for the Main Stage can seat 1276 people. The Small Stage can seat an audience of around 230 people. Several times per season we also present chamber concerts in our foyer; these are free to attend, and you can sit wherever you find a place – on chairs, benches, or on the stairs.
In the region …
We tour within the Västra Götaland region to different sized stages:
- Smaller scale productions for small stages such as community centres and libraries
- Musicals and dance performances adapted to medium-sized stages. Learn more about our stage in the town of Skövde
- Dance performances for large stages. Click here for more information about our dance tour repertoire
… and around the world.
Part of our artistic vision is to go on tours to encounter and inspire new audiences by giving guest performances. GöteborgsOperans Danskompani has been on tours around the world, our orchestra has toured to Japan and our chorus is now a recurring point in the program at Halden’s Summer Opera.
