Giordano Bellincampi was born in Italy and raised in Copenhagen, where he began his career as a trombonist with the Royal Danish Orchestra. He made his professional conducting debut in 1994. Today, he serves as Music Director of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and teaches at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
Bellincampi is a sought-after guest conductor, collaborating with orchestras and musical institutions worldwide, from Scandinavia and Europe to North America, Asia, and Australasia. In the 2024/25 season, he will debut with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, return to the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and the Estonian National Symphony, and lead the Auckland Philharmonia in a diverse program featuring Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, Respighi’s Roman Trilogy, and a concert performance of La Bohème.
At the Göteborg Opera, Bellincampi has previously conducted Tosca and a concert featuring works by Wagner, Elgar, and Mendelssohn with the orchestra, choir, and soloists.
Recently, with the Auckland Philharmonia, he completed a full cycle of Beethoven’s symphonies to celebrate the composer’s 250th anniversary, a gala performance marking the renaming of Auckland’s Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, and a concert staging of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. This continues a tradition of annual concert opera performances, including Verdi’s Aida and Otello, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut, and the New Zealand premiere of Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt.
Bellincampi has held several prominent positions, including Chief Conductor of I Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra (2013–2018), and Duisburg Philharmonic (2012–2017). He was also Music Director of Denmark’s National Opera in Aarhus (2005–2013), Copenhagen Phil (2000–2006), and Chief Conductor of Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen (1997–2000), Denmark’s leading ensemble for contemporary music.
