Jose Ruiz is a choreographer and dancer trained in classical ballet and contemporary dance at Centro Andaluz de Danza in Seville, with a degree in contemporary dance choreography from the Conservatorio Superior de Danza María de Ávila in Madrid. He continued his studies at The Place in London. José Ruiz has performed in a diverse repertoire with works by Nacho Duato, Johan Inger, Klevis Elmazaj, Sharon Friedman, Isabel Vázquez, and Ramón Oller, among others.
Among his own creations are Desere (RESAD, Madrid 2019), Los que ya no son (CSDMA, Madrid 2018), (con)porte (Museo Reina Sofía, Madrid 2017), and Mediterranean Sugar (CSDMA, Madrid 2016). His recent collaborations as a freelance dancer include Gran Bolero with Jesús Rubio Gamo's company (awarded Best Dance Show at the Spanish Max Prize Awards 2020), and works created by and for Cienfuegos Dance Company, MDV Dance Company, Ramón Oller, and Ballet Béjart Lausanne (Teatros del Canal), as well as pieces by Klevis Elmazaj.
Ruiz’s passion for opera has led him to various roles in collaboration with directors like Christof Loy (Rusalka, Eugene Onegin, Arabella), David McVicar (Rigoletto, Adriana Lecouvreur), Barrie Kosky (The Nose), and Bob Wilson, at venues such as Teatro Real, Semper Oper Dresden, Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Teatro de la Maestranza. In 2022, he began a collaboration with stage director Rafael R. Villalobos on Philip Glass’s Orphée, contributing to exploring new perspectives in the creative process.
