Maja is a costume designer, artist, researcher, curator and professor at HDK-Valand - Academy of Art and Design. In both her art and research, she explores gender and sexuality in relation to clothes and examines how art and design can challenge norms, highlight and challenge power structures and promote discussion, change and increased gender equality in various ways. This is described in her thesis, Body Acts Queer: Clothing as a performative challenge to heteronormativity (Gunn, 2016).
As a costume designer, she has worked on the films Audition (Sirén, 2015) and Baby (Sirén, 2016), both nominated for Swedish Guldbagge Awards, and on the dance work From The Margins, This, Unmentioned (MacArthur, 2009) in New York. As an artist, she exhibits works in Swedish and international exhibitions. In 2021 she will exhibit at Kungsbacka Konsthall and Rian Designmuseum. In 2017 she was one of the three curators of Norm Form at ArkDes in Stockholm, an exhibition showing design, architecture and crafts that challenge norms. Through this exhibition, she came into contact with choreographer Carl Olof Berg.
