Champagne Tears is a mini-operetta that explores the life of composer Jacques Offenbach, accompanied by his music. Offenbach was a master at parodying his contemporary world – which he did with exuberant, melodious music. The operetta’s entertaining and touching plot is based on actual events from the composer’s life. Who and what inspired him to create our best-loved operetta tunes?
At Offenbach’s side was his closest friend and dearest enemy, the eminent prima donna Hortense Schneider, for whom he created several leading roles. The two were often at loggerheads, but their friendship lasted a lifetime despite war, geographical distance and fierce critics.
Jacques Offenbach and soprano Hortense Schneider are portrayed by The Göteborg Opera’s popular and acclaimed soloists Lars Hjertner and Carolina Sandgren. Musical artist Ingahlill Wagelin acts as a narrator guiding us through the story. The music is borrowed from operettas including La belle Hélène, Les contes d’Hoffmann and Offenbach’s big breakthrough work, Orphée aux enfers.
The production will tour venues in Västra Götaland, including the Göteborg Opera’s Small Stage.
