In Paris, young poet Rodolfo bumps into a neighbour in the dark. He remarks how cold her hand is, and she tells him her name is Mimì. The start of love affair can be as simple as that. But something is wrong with Mimì. She seems ill, and the couple’s and their friends’ intensive lifestyle doesn’t help matters. When spring comes to Paris, it doesn’t only bring life. And love does not conquer all.
Puccini’s La Bohème is easy to love. In four short acts, he captures the essence of the recklessness of youth, where youth itself blossoms, wilts and dies. Joy and despair co-exist in tandem.
