We’ve always stayed close to our audiences. Through tours, talks, open rehearsals, participatory projects and outreach activities, we meet many of you alongside performances and outside the auditoriums. In this way, The Göteborg Opera strengthens and enriches people who live and work in Västra Götaland. In times of turmoil and anxiety, it does us good to be amazed and surprised together, share strong emotions and enjoy great art. When other aspects of life draw us apart, culture can bring us together.
Today, The Göteborg Opera is a nationally and internationally acclaimed cultural institution. In 2022, we were named “the world's most sustainable opera house” by the jury of the prestigious International Opera Awards. Three years before that, we were one of six opera houses in the world to be nominated in the category “Opera House of the Year”.
The opera house by the river is designed taking inspiration from the sea; its architecture is reminiscent of a full-rigged ship with billowing sails. For three decades, we’ve been discovering new destinations and horizons together, on a continuous onward journey. Now we continue our journey of discovery across the sea of experiences – or “the bountiful ocean of fine arts”, as The Göteborg Opera’s godmother Birgit Nilsson expressed it at the opera house’s inauguration.
We look forward to a new era of new stories and touching, engaging performing arts, created in Västra Götaland, on an international level.
