A recital is a great way to get up close to the music and performers. The singer chooses the programme in consultation with the pianist. The selected pieces reflect their strengths, and the programme is highly personal. Each song is a microcosm that encapsulates an entire world or a compelling life experience. Songs from different eras, countries and styles create an infinite range of moods. During the 2024/2025 season, you can experience four magnificent voices, each in a separate recital.

The recital series Grandi Voci (Italian for ‘great voices’) brings you some of our finest singers and pianists in a heartfelt and intimate atmosphere.
Julia Sporsén & Henning Ruhe
Gabriel Fauré’s song cycle La bonne chanson with text by Paul Verlaine, and arias and music by Jean Sibelius and Sergej Rachmaninov.
Stellar soprano, sensational, fabulous and a veritable powerhouse. Julia Sporsén is currently among Sweden’s most acclaimed sopranos. Her technique and vibrant, gilded timbre shine in a broad repertoire including Bellini, Verdi and contemporary works.
Sporsén was born and raised in Gothenburg. She debuted here in her home town as Kumudha in John Adams’s A Flowering Tree in 2015. Other roles performed at the Göteborg Opera include Ingeborg in Fritiofs saga, Micaëla in Carmen and Elsalill in Herr Arnes penningar.
In 2023, Sporsén sang at the Nobel Prize ceremony and was awarded Svenska Dagbladet’s opera prize for portraying the title role in Bellini’s Norma at Folkoperan. “In the service of artistic expression, she tests all boundaries with beautiful sensibility and complete vocal mastery,” the Jury wrote in its statement.
In the 2024/2025 season, Sporsén will appear at the Göteborg Opera in roles such as Desdemona in Otello and the title role in Iolanta, and will perform Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder in the orchestral concert In Memoriam.
She will be accompanied by our Artistic Director Henning Ruhe, who for this occasion exchanges his office for our big stage and proves his own artistry as he has done in many international competitions as well as solo and chamber concerts on prominent stages in Europe, North America and Asia.
