“A truly astounding performance” Göteborgs-Posten

“Puccini truly touches our hearts with this work” GP
A glittering thread runs from Puccini’s music straight to our hearts – and to our tear ducts. Madama Butterfly is a study in the beauty and pain of being human, a tragedy about human relations and international power play.
In Japan, the American naval officer Pinkerton buys himself a young, temporary wife – Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly. She sees an opportunity for a better life, abandons her culture and wholeheartedly embraces her role as an American wife. Little does she imagine that for Pinkerton, it’s all just a game. When he goes back to the US, Butterfly spends her entire existence awaiting his return.
This acclaimed production from 2016 is directed by Japanese Yoshi Oïda. He was a teenager when Japan was defeated in World War II and occupied by the United States. Ida Falk Winland makes her role debut in the title role, while tenors Adam Frandsen and Davide Giusti alternate in the role of Pinkerton. The conductors are Tobias Ringborg and Martyna Szymczak.
We perform Madama Butterfly in the “Brescia version”, which is less revised and more openly condemnatory of colonialism and exoticism.
