Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is an iconic Baroque piece. Each of the work’s four violin concertos depicts the weather and atmosphere of a season: the flowering spring, the heat of summer, autumn with its harvests and hunting, and finally the glittering, dramatic winter. Vivaldi succeeded so well at this that people have been humming his weather forecasts for over 300 years. The Four Seasons is conducted by Benjamin Schmid, regarded as among the most versatile violinists of our time.
The musical celebration continues after the break. Robert Schumann envelops us in greenery with his first symphony, known as the Spring Symphony. The exuberant, powerful music brings spring into full bloom with the swirling winds of the finale, filling us all with hope and anticipation of spring.
