This lively, enchanting comic opera tells the story of poor Angelina, who deserves better. There story has a cruel stepfather instead of the traditional wicked stepmother; instead of the fairy godmother, there’s a clever fixer; and rather than losing a shoe, she misplaces a bracelet. Otherwise, much follows the familiar fairy tale of Cinderella in this commedia dell’arte-inspired production, where kindness triumphs in the end.
Maestro Giancarlo Andretta will ensure that Rossini’s music expresses its effervescent lightness. Mezzo-soprano Ann-Kristin Jones will sing the title role, and Scottish tenor Liam Bonthrone will portray her prince, Don Ramiro. Director David Radok's beloved 2003 production has been staged multiple times at the Göteborg Opera, most recently in 2015.
